Positive People Are More Successful (Also More Lucky) Than Negative People. Here’s How You Can Get A Positive Mindset (Yes, It Can Be Trained)
According to Shawn Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage, success cannot happen unless you are happy. Let me say that again, success follows happiness. He also states that people with a positive mindset are more successful than those with a negative mindset.
So why has everything that we have been led to believe is that once we achieve success then we will be happy.
This makes some sense though, for instance, we often hear when someone finally wins the gold medal, or gets to the top of the business. They have a brief moment of celebration, then there is a void, a gap, with nothing. There is nothing to aim for, no goal. They thought they would be happy but they are not. So what happens? They then get back to focusing on the next win, the goal, the next challenge.
I see it in business owners everyday, in myself as well. We hit targets, sometimes major goals that we set for ourselves, and the celebration is literally a small pat on the back and then it’s on to the next thing. We don’t allow ourselves to enjoy the ride.
And yet, research shows that this is exactly the opposite of what we should be doing. We should be enjoying the ride, and enjoying the process because that is what will lead us to success.
People always ask why I am so positive, like its a bad thing. Well…..
It has been shown that positive people are “luckier” than negative people. Ok, that’s not entirely true, what the research shows is that both positive and negative people can be presented with exactly the same opportunity, and yet the negative people don’t see it…literally, don’t see it. Whilst the positive people pick up on them immediately.
In his book Shawn talks about an experiment whereby they had 2 groups of people, one positive, one negative. They asked them to walk into a coffee shop and buy a coffee. Placed on the ground by the front door was a $10 note. Most of the positive people saw it and picked it up. Most of the negative people stepped straight over it, missing it completely. Same opportunity, different mindset, different result.
Being positive literally opens the mind up to more opportunities!
But how can we be happier and more positive when we haven’t achieved our goals yet?
Can you actually train happiness? can you train yourself to be more positive?
In a word… YES!
With this one exercise it is proven that we become more happier and more positive.
Do this exercise to train a positive mindset:
Each morning, take 1-2minutes, to write down 3 things that occurred the day before that you are grateful for.
It can be anything from, the weather, the fresh air, the 5 minute walk you had, the chat with an old friend, the sale you made, literally anything.
Just write them down, say them aloud, take a moment to just acknowledge them.
This exercise will also train your mind to find the positive things that go on, it will open the mind up to more opportunities.
By the way, if you have kids, and you want them to better in school, this exercise will work with them too. In fact the research was initially conducted with school kids. Each morning they just told their parents 3 things they were grateful for.
So this is why I choose to be a positive person. Because it will literally help me become more successful. Plus being negative is just freaking boring 🙂
I would love to hear what you think? Are you a positive or negative person? If you are negative, will you commit to being more positive? Let me know by leaving a comment below.
